How we started

Our History

Find out how the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was established.

The bilateral relations between Nigeria and Liberia started in 1960 with the establishment of Diplomatic Missions in each other’s Capital. The relationship has been cordial and with mutual respect. Since the establishment of the Diplomatic Missions; there has been high exchange of visits between officials of governments of both brotherly countries. The two countries consider each other as strategic partners in regional and global affairs and have enjoyed diplomatic relations across economic, political, social, cultural, consular and mostly in the area of peace and security. Significant developments in the economic relations between the two countries include the ratification of Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) in 1984 and the establishment of Nigeria-Liberia Joint Commission, which its inaugural session was held in Nigeria, on July 14th and 15th, 2014. That session laid the basis for enhanced socio-economic interactions between the two sides and cooperation in promoting regional security and development.
Liberia has remained grateful to Nigeria for the great sacrifices in human lives and enormous resources it spent in mobilizing and the actual intervention of the Economic Community of West African Forces (ECOMOG) that fought to stop the 14 years civil war that engulfed the nation in the 1980s and 1990s. At the moment only Nigeria and Ghana are members of the ECOWAS Advisory Training Team (EATT) currently helping to train the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), and whose efforts have led to Liberia contributing forces to intervene in the crisis in Sudan and Mali, to the admiration of other African countries and the other developed world.
